In 2035, when 5G’s full economic benefit should be realised across the globe, a broad range of industries – from transportation to entertainment and education, and everything in between – could produce up to 10.7 trillion euros worth of goods and services enabled by 5G mobile technology. Meanwhile, Europe’s 5G Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) is developing new applications across a diverse set of verticals spanning proofs of concept, prototypes, demonstrations, trials, and pilots in order to validate the functionalities defined for 5G by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) – Enhanced Mobile Broadband, Massive Machine Type Communications, and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications – so consumers and sector end users can really know what 5G is all about.

How to use the 5G PPP verticals cartography:

The experiments are taking place in Europe between 2018 and 2020. You can view the experiments by sector, country, and ITU functionality by clicking on the boxes on the right. New country locations and tests will be added in the future. Meanwhile, enjoy our 5G PPP showcase.

SLICENET - 5G Smart Grid Self-Healing Use Case

The automation in distribution with self-healing solutions is a critical challenge to consider in the transformational evolution towards Smart/Smarter Grid. Self-healing will enable system operators to benefit from a significant reduction in the outage duration, the number of affected customers as well as in the number of switching manoeuvres required during network reconfiguration procedure involved in Fault Detection Isolation and service Restoration (FDIR). Timely, reliable and secure communications are crucial in this use case.

BlueSPACE: Co-existance with PONs

This blueSPACE proof of concept defines the options and related requirements for a shared infrastructure between fixed PON and wireless access networks. Technology solutions are based both on the use of spatially and spectrally isolated architectures and extend to the control plane issues in order to handle each type of infrastructure through slicing.

BlueSpace: Indoor Ultra-high Broadband Access

This blueSPACE proof of concept aims at providing high data rates for indoor hotspots. The scenario utilises on one hand the ultra-high broadband connectivity offered by the specially designed blueSPACE small cells that operate at 26GHz-18GHz and the massive deployment of such small cells over an area that is supported by the SDM-extended optical fronthaul infrastructure of blueSPACE. 

Public Safety and Digital Divide Resorption

5G-XCast: Spectrum for 5G bands

This 5G-XCast trial focuses on the sharing of spectrum using LSA in 5G pioneer bands taking into account PWS needs.

In terms of 5G functionalities, the trial investigates: 

  • LSA.
  • eMBMS.

5G-TRANSFORMER: Emergency Services

Large-scale event sites have a lot of groups deployed to cover emergencies and have to communicate between themselves in real time. This verttical application covers emergencies that require real-time communication between ambulances and doctors.

5G TRANSFORMER: Emergency Health Services

Thanks to the cooperation between vehicles, streaming information is provided to all the vehicles that want/need to access to it. This information can be used to identify potential obstacles that cannot be detected through on-board sensors.

In terms of ITU 5G functionalities, 5G-TRANSFORMER investigates:

5G-TRANSFORMER: Intersection Collision Avoidance (ICA)

The purpose of the ICA system is to alert drivers about the existence of any possible obstacles and, if necessary, activate the emergency braking system. The communication infrastructure facilitates a real-time exchange of data between the entities involved.

5G-TRANSFORMER: Cloud Robotics for Industrial Automation

The controlling functionality of the robots is moved to the cloud to benefit from its massive computing power.
Huge amounts of information will have to be transferred instantaneously. With lower latency and higher bandwidth than other forms of wireless connectivity, 5G is the optimal choice.

5Gtango: Smart Manufacturing

Smart manufacturing is based upon the processing of operational data, machine data, and process data for building the future digital pervasive supply chains. Such data is used to control the intra-logistics supply chain as well as to optimise the production process and the machines involved (Factory and process automation).
