In 2035, when 5G’s full economic benefit should be realised across the globe, a broad range of industries – from transportation to entertainment and education, and everything in between – could produce up to 10.7 trillion euros worth of goods and services enabled by 5G mobile technology. Meanwhile, Europe’s 5G Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) is developing new applications across a diverse set of verticals spanning proofs of concept, prototypes, demonstrations, trials, and pilots in order to validate the functionalities defined for 5G by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) – Enhanced Mobile Broadband, Massive Machine Type Communications, and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications – so consumers and sector end users can really know what 5G is all about.

How to use the 5G PPP verticals cartography:

The experiments are taking place in Europe between 2018 and 2020. You can view the experiments by sector, country, and ITU functionality by clicking on the boxes on the right. New country locations and tests will be added in the future. Meanwhile, enjoy our 5G PPP showcase.

The public warning system trials aim at demonstrating utilisation of multimedia in public warning alert. Currently, public warning messages mainly contain short text messages. The cellular devices have developed rapidly and more informative warning messages containing for example images, maps and video could be delivered.

MATILDA: Remote Control and Monitoring of Automobile Electrical Systems Use Case

This vertical application addresses the need to remotely send and receive all data and signals to and from an automobile’s ECUs (Electronic Control Units), considering the increasing intelligence of automobiles in today’s world.

In terms of ITU 5G functionalities, MATILDA investigates: 

  • End to end orchestration mechanisms.

Public Safety and Digital Divide Resorption

MATILDA: 5G Emergency Infrastructure and Services Orchestration with SLA Enforcement

This vertical application benefits from the end-to-end SDN and NFV capabilities to build heterogeneous 5G emergency communications infrastructure and services. It is based on the implementation of a 5G-enabled emergency response pilot for real time intervention monitoring and critical infrastructure protection, extended with performance monitoring engines and advanced Operation, Administration and Management (OAM) capabilities.

BlueSpace: Broadband Access in crowded areas

This blueSPACE proof of concepy focuses on technology solutions that provide high data rate service to a large number of concentrated mobile users, including mainly the provision of services at large events, e.g., a football game or a concert, or crowded public areas (e.g. open squares, large metro stations).

5G-XCast: Object oriented broadcasting

This 5G-XCast trial focuses on object oriented broadcasting. 

With object-based broadcasting the programme is captured in the conventional way but stored as a set of its component parts, be they audio, video, captions or other material along with detailed metadata that describes how these should be assembled.

These component parts are then delivered separately and rendered on the device in the form most suitable for a particular user and presented in a way that takes account of the capabilities of the device, the environment and the user’s preferences.
